Cable Category (1)

ความรู้สนับสนุนด้านเทคนิค : Cable Category (1)

LENSO: Cable Category (1)

Cable Category Definition
As new technology make higher speed of data
transmission
, higher performance of cabling become
necessity. Unshielded Twisted Pairs
(UTP) known as
popular media used in the cabling system and classifying
of UTP cables and connecting hardware by performance
capability had to be established. These capabilities have
been broken down to a series of the following categories.

Category 3:
Characterized up to 16 MHz
Intended for older network traffic and phone systems
where the frequency performance is less important.
Commonly
, CAT3 cable is used in older 10BaseT and
Token Ring network infrastructures
, and for telephone
premise wiring.

Category 4: Characterized up to 20 MHz
Developing for data transmission improved from CAT3
cable
, almost used in 10BaseT and Token Ring network
infrastructures wiring.

Category 5: Characterized up to 100 MHz
Ratified standard for unshielded twisted pair. Handles
voice or data at 100MHz over 22 or 24 AWG wire.
Used for high-speed twisted-pair networks such as
100 base-TX
, fast Ethernet.

Category 5e: Characterized higher than 100 MHz
More stringent specifications than CAT5. CAT5e has
a higher rating
, than CAT5..it also provides better
performance. Cable manufacturers have improved
the cabling
, connectors and patch cords of regular
CAT5 to provide an improved attenuation to crosstalk
ratio
(ACR), and to meet or exceed all the parameters
of the CAT5e standards approved by the Electronic
Industries Association/Telecommunications Industry
Association
(EIA/Telecommunications Industry Association)
and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
(IEEE).

Category 6: The latest standard being introduced by
EIA/TIA is Category 6. While the Category 6 standard
has not yet been ratified by EIA/TIA
, many manufacturers
are offering Category 6 solutions. Category 6 is tested
at a baseline of 250 MHz. Category 6 is capable of full
duplex transmission
, and its robust construction provides
a generous amount of headroom for the future.

Category 7: The Telecommunications Industry Association
who sets cabling standards has not set any standards
for this category. Some manufacturers are calling their
cable CAT7. The International Standards Organization/
International Electrotechnical Commission has also specified
a 600-MHz copper standard
, but it, like CAT6, is only a
working item and less further along in the ratification
process. Due to of the current state of copper technology
,
CAT7 would have to be shielded. As a result
, it will likely be
used
, instead of CAT6 only in those areas of the world
where fully shielded CAT5 cabling
(CAT5. Class D) is widely
deployed today. In
North America, and other region where
unshielded copper cabling is common
, CAT7 will not be
seriously considered; instead
, the choice will be between
CAT6 and fiber. The Telecommunications Industry
Association/Electrical Industries Association is looking at
CAT7 standard with the bandwidth of up to 600 MHz.

To ensure overall system integrity
, horizontal cables need
to be terminated with connection hardware of the same
category or higher. Also cables used for patch cords and
cross connect jumpers need to be the same performance
category or higher as the horizontal cables they connect
to. Lastly
, UTP cabling systems are not Category 5, 5e or 6
complaint unless all components of the system
satisfy their respective category requirements.
